Red Mountain Tour, April 08
Interesting tour of every sort of snow on Red Mountain (the one near
Salmon La Sac) with Russ Schwartz and Jim Oker, and of course Gretchen and myself. Bomber crust at the base
which turned to mush as the day warmed up, but of course the crust
and colder temps climbed with us. Found an ellusive powder bowl on
a NE aspect and got in a few nice powder turns, but 260 ft of
vertical is too short to yo-yo more than twice without feeling
pretty silly.
Headed up to the saddle across from the powder to see what we could
see, and then thought we'd have a nice corn run down. Turned out to be
more crust than corn, and we're working pretty hard for our turns.
Nice terrain, will have to come back some time with either more
consistent corn or more consistent winter snow. The massive avy run on
the big open NE face was a bit sobering, and good to keep in mind for
full winter skiing.
